Vail, often synonymous with wintertime glamour and world – class skiing, transforms into a haven of outdoor splendor during the summer months. Before my own summer trip, I found myself grappling with the question: What on earth should I pack? As it turns out, summer in Vail is a delightful blend of embracing nature, relishing the laid – back mountain lifestyle, and feasting your eyes on breathtaking landscapes. It’s a destination that beckons adventurers, food enthusiasts, and anyone seeking respite from the sweltering heat and urban chaos.
Our itinerary was a mix of daytime hikes through the mountains and evenings spent indulging in the culinary delights of Vail Village. This dual – natured schedule, coupled with the extreme day – to – night temperature variations, made packing feel like a strategic puzzle. With daytime temperatures often ranging from the 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 21 – 28°C), and evenings dropping to the 40s or 50s Fahrenheit (around 4 – 15°C), it was as if we needed to pack for two seasons in one suitcase. And let’s not forget that many of the local establishments lack air conditioning, adding another layer of complexity to our packing conundrum.
Clothing: The Art of Layering
When it comes to clothing, layering is the name of the game. For those sun – drenched daytime adventures, think athletic wear, breathable t – shirts, tanks, and shorts. They’ll keep you cool as you explore the trails and soak up the mountain air. But as the sun begins to set, it’s time to switch gears and reach for something a bit more elegant yet still casual. Sundresses paired with a light jacket, long pants with short – sleeved colored shirts, or lightweight trousers are perfect for strolling through Vail Village and dining at its charming eateries. And don’t forget to tuck a couple of long – sleeve shirts or a light sweater into your bag; they’ll be your saviors on those chilly evenings.
Even in the mountains, there’s no shortage of opportunities for a refreshing swim. So, pack your swimsuit and get ready to take a dip in one of Vail’s beautiful lakes or swimming spots. And yes, jackets are a summer essential in Vail. A light, compact rain jacket is a must – have, as summer showers can be quite unpredictable in the mountains. A jean jacket or a similar option is great for adding an extra layer of warmth during cooler evenings, while a pull – over sweatshirt is ideal for early – morning hikes.
Of course, don’t overlook the basics. Hiking socks, underwear, and pajamas are essential. I’ve found that wool socks can be itchy in the summer heat, so I swear by Wrightsocks for hiking. They’re not only comfortable but also help prevent blisters, ensuring your feet stay happy on those long treks.
Shoes: Comfort for Every Step
For hiking, you don’t need to invest in heavy – duty hiking boots. A comfortable pair of trail shoes or even sneakers with good tread will do the trick, especially if you’re sticking to the trails near Vail Village. And remember to pair them with your trusty Wrightsocks. When it comes to exploring Vail Village, comfort is key. A comfortable sandal or a pair of casual sneakers is perfect for strolling from one restaurant to another or browsing the local shops. My personal favorite travel sandal at the moment is the Reef, which allows me to walk all day without any discomfort.
Outdoor Gear: Essentials for Adventure
At higher altitudes, the sun’s rays can be intense, so sun protection is non – negotiable. Pack a high – quality sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses, lip balm with SPF, and a wide – brimmed hat. They’ll shield you from the sun’s harsh UV rays and help prevent sunburn and other sun – related issues.
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when you’re at a higher altitude. Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go. A small daypack is also incredibly handy. It’s perfect for carrying your water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and other essentials while you’re out exploring. Whether you opt for a traditional backpack like the Fjallraven, which can be folded flat and easily packed in a suitcase, or a lighter belt bag, having a place to store your belongings is a game – changer. And don’t forget to pack a first aid kit. Include items like band – aids, blister bandages for those long hikes, and pain reliever to be prepared for any minor injuries or discomforts.
Extras: Little Luxuries for a Comfortable Trip
A simple hand fan has become an indispensable part of my summer travel gear. It’s lightweight, foldable, and can easily fit into a pocket or purse. In restaurants and shops without air conditioning, it provides a much – needed breeze and can make your experience significantly more comfortable.
The alpine mountain air is notoriously dry, and your skin will definitely notice. While you’re packing your regular skincare products, make sure to include a high – SPF sunscreen, a good moisturizer, and a hydrating lip balm. I’ve been relying on the Shiseido Urban Environment Oil – Free Sunscreen SPF 42 with hyaluronic acid for years. It not only protects my skin from the sun but also keeps it moisturized in the arid mountain air.
Electronics: Entertainment and Connectivity
For the journey to Vail and those relaxing evenings on your hotel balcony or vacation rental, don’t forget to pack some entertainment. A pair of headphones, a good book, or an e – reader can make the time fly by. And of course, bring chargers for all your devices, including your smartphone, camera, and smartwatch. I also like to pack a small power bank, especially when I know I’ll be out hiking all day and might need to recharge my devices on the go.
Packing for a summer trip to Vail may seem challenging at first, but with this guide in hand, you’ll be well – prepared to make the most of your time in this beautiful mountain paradise. So, start packing, and get ready for an unforgettable summer adventure in Vail!
